In Mafia you can go into any backyard, and there will be people having a chat, or a chap will be reading on his porch. There are literally hundred of things scattered around: bins, furniture, items on people's desks and porches. You will see some models re-used, but overall each street feels unique and the amount of small features (rubbish, furniture etc) is just incredible. The roads are very well done, the transition between the paved and unpaved roads is seamless and incredibly naturally fits the map (e.g. You are no longer stuck in a middle of a concrete jungle, but can fairly easy change your surrounding by crossing the bridge to another part of the map. First off, the map mimics those of the older GTAs with smaller towns scattered around the map with their own styles. It is incredible to how much extend the developers went to re-create the 1970-ies city. It has that GTA feel to it where the environment doesn't distract you from whatever you are doing, but acts as a nice background - it could be nicer though. The colours are vivid, the lighting is natural and realistic transition between buildings and the outside works well. They don't blow your mind away, but certainly beat GTA 5's. Overall I think Mafia 3 has become a worthy and a sole successor for the GTA series, and it will take R* a lot of effort to re-claim the lost position if they want to appeal to their long-time fans. Since both games developers are part of T2 I wonder if the long term plan is to replace the GTA series with Mafia - especially with how the things are going now. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the new Mafia seems less similar to the old Mafias and much more closer to what GTA is (or rather was). I'm not going to get into the argument whether the sites are being paid by the competition to trash this game, but it sure sounds this way. As I notice now, all negative reviews come from the big web-sites, whereas ordinary folks are praising the game. I didn't share the limitless enthusiasm of Mafia 1 fans, but Mafia 2 was incredibly pretty, so I thought that for £5 I can't do much wrong by buying Mafia 3 - despite an disproportionate number of negative reviews that it had. And don't get me wrong: there are lots of things that can be done better in Mafia 3, but the sheer amount of good things overweight any problems it has.Īs some of you may already know, I have recently started playing Mafia 3 (£5 off eBay, bargain). Maybe it will give them something to enjoy until/if GTA 6 comes out. I do not intend to sow a seed of hatred by creating this thread, but thought that it would be appropriate for me to express my impression on this and maybe give those fellow gamers who haven't yet played Mafia 3 an insights of what the game is like.
